Milky Way Totem

Sikka Art & Design Festival, 2024

Commissioned by Dubai Culture’s Sikka Art & Design Festival, I created this bespoke 3D artwork.

The ‘Milky Way Totem’ stands as a celestial homage to the ancient and venerable tradition of totem pole carving, deeply rooted in the cultures of the Indigenous peoples of the Northwest Coast of North America. Drawing inspiration from these monumental poles which are traditionally carved from cedar and vibrantly painted to narrate tales of family lineage and spirituality, the artist sees many parallels with her own indigenous Palestinian heritage. The Milky Way Totem is a profound statement on the continuity of Indigenous traditions, a celebration of their resilience, and a reminder of their rightful place in the cosmic order. It is a fusion of ancient art forms and contemporary celestial awe, inviting viewers to consider the connections between culture, art, and the universe. Through this work, I assert that just as the stars guide us through the night, the strength of Indigenous cultures remains a guiding light in understanding our place in the world and beyond.
